Scribble - Proccess

My first approach to scribbling didn’t have the desired feel, the lines were too reparative for a scribble type of style. When I first watched this video, I admittedly was working on homework and trying to multitask. So, before continuing my project in class I watched it and tried to really absorb the content. One key factor to a scribbling technique is the intent of where your lines are. Scribble makes it seem like these lines are at random when that is in fact not true. It is crucial to keep this in mind, especially when transitioning from the darkest parts to the lighter. Something to be mindful of as well is to avoid clusters, which are unintentional dark patches formed by all the conjunction lines. If you aren’t careful, these could really throw off the unity of the artwork. I am finding I am having a bit of a hard time avoiding clusters, so I will have to be extra careful.

Ideas and Intentions - “Bloom”

I want to create these flower/people hybrids that are emerging from the scribbles. I personally find Scribbles can evoke a lot of uneasy feelings and depict certain troubling emotions. I initially wanted to lean into that, as I have been experiencing a bit of a challenging part of my life recently. However, it is so important to remember that those are temporary, and I have noticed that good change often happens due to poor circumstances, and preservation through challenges. Additionally, important lessons that benefit you further along your path are often learned through times like this. So, I wanted to show this thought through my piece, therefore these human/flowers are springing and blooming from the scribble abyss. I have the human parts as ballerinas, as I wanted it to have a certain aspect of grace.

Archive Project

 Lethbridge Sky's

I have found myself increasingly fascinated with the sky lately. I am not too sure why this is, I think coming from Calgary to living in Lethbridge is a big change in atmosphere. I am not sure why it's so prominent this year, however, as it is my second year back. There is such a different feeling here, and it's partially because the land is stretched out and you can see so much of it, including the sky. I am living in the last townhouse on the very edge of the coolies, and it really feels like a whole other world out there sometimes. So, for my archive I am doing a bunch of different drawings of the sky. I honestly view the clouds and colors and layers as paintings, and as cheesy as it sounds it feels like I am living inside of one. It is so important to appreciate everyday things in life we don't really think about otherwise.

I wish I could have dedicated more time to my drawings and their overall presentation. That being said, I did enjoy experimenting with different mediums and styles of drawing. I did a few digitally, which was very interesting. I liked digital drawings for this specific assignment as I could get very bright, saturated colors easily. I also could make interesting marks within the sky zoomed in, and upon zooming out it blends to look like a more normal sky. On a few, I used a very thin amount of Vaseline on watercolor paper in the shape of clouds. This way, I could cover the whole page with whatever sky I wanted and the clouds would be left white, as the Vaseline acted like a barrier.

Scribble Drawings

For my scribble drawings, I had a bit of a hard time getting each drawing to have the visual effect I imagined. I thought it might be because my pen was a bit too thick, and my drawings were too small for that thickness. However this was important to learn before starting my main project, as I would have not learned this technique of line weight even in scribbling. I tend to have a messier sketch style, so this style came more or less naturally to me. It was very fun to experiment with pens so freely. I then got some ideas for my project.

Bloom - Process

I wanted to create these hybrids of flowers and people, to show growth. I also wanted to evoke a sort of beautiful, peaceful, and graceful atmosphere, so I chose stock photos of dancers. I then found photos of flowers and collaged the two together, and make reference poses for my interest points. This is one example, however I had other attempts and trails while experimenting. Overall, these turned out perfectly for what I had in mind.

Assignment 3 -

Art forms range so widely, and there are still so many I want to try. Art is so subjective, so I struggled a bit with this project. I am a bit of a perfectionist in art, and tend to over detail my work, so this was quite a challenge. Contour line art is not a style I am particularly fond of, so I really tried to find a method of it I enjoyed and felt like I was actually making art on my own terms. So, I used a tapered brush of an alcohol based marker to make each object as I felt the most free with my drawing tools. I wanted my images to look somewhat fluid and have an Interesting visual aspect, even though I couldn’t see what I was drawing. So, I focused on adding emphasis on my curves but still trying to maintain the accurate anatomy of each respective object. With this, I actually had a lot of fun drawing my images and it made me realize it’s important to give other techniques a chance before immediately dismissing them.

Reflection - So, I did this assignment very separately from the style of my peers. I haven't been able to attend class much at the time due to my health, and the last thing I remember doing in class was blind, one-line contour drawings. So, in my head, this was the same for the assignment. I was very nervous to initially put it up for critique, as it was vastly different than my peers. However, everyone was so kind and more than supportive. This was also during the first assignment, our class was not super close or bonded yet, and every single one of my peers had my back in saying it fits the assignment guidelines. I am super grateful for that.

Here are some of my favorite drawings;

This Eye
This Perfume Bottle

This Brush

It Girl

Due to my lack of inspiration, I went back to look at some of my favorite artists' work. I am a very detail oriented artist, and many of my inspirations are as well. However one that immediately got me thinking was Barbara Kruger. My subject matter consists of various makeup and skincare products, as well as a few facial features. I wanted my theme to show a distorted reality of consumerism and the constant pressure on women in today's beauty standards, a theme Kruger makes evident in her work. People are expected to look more like dolls, and new ways to achieve this are being shoved in our faces. Brands create new insecurities, new problems on yourself you would have never noticed prior so you will spend money to fix it.

I know not everyone of my drawings takes up a whole page, but as I started to enjoy this art form I did not want to create a box for myself, and had a vision of how I wanted to execute this which needed small filler images among the big ones. I think this dramatic change of scale made my piece very visually interesting yet chaotic and balanced at once.

I initially just had the items drawn, but it did not evoke the message I wanted it to. I found, depending on perspective, it could be a decorative piece for a type of makeup space. Once I added a few facial features it felt much more complete.
